Advice on refinishing fake wood doors?
I've got these ugly fake wood interior doors. They aren't even a real wood veneer, they are a fake wood veneer on a hollow door. Even though they have a prominent " wood grain" i.e. 3 D wood grain effect , they don't fool anyone that they're real, and to top it off, they've even been varnished. For various reasons, I can't replace them so I want to refinish them. I was talking to a painter decorator about sanding them and painting them white but he said I'd regret it because that wood grain would just make it look cheap and nasty. I thought about sticky back plastic, but then I'd just get a new kind of cheap and nasty. If I sand the " grain" completely off, I might go right through the fake veneer it's pretty thin .How can I get these doors white without making them uglier?
How can I remove scratches from old wood doors in an old Victorian Home?
My Boston Terrior scratched some doors in the old Victorian home where I am house sitting for the winter. In some places you can feel the scratches. Several layers but not all of finish have been removed. How can I fix this before the owner returns?Hey A little judgmental, huh a I did tie him up when I left the house, but misjudged the distance. b the 2nd time was because I did not know he could get up the stairs to the room my daughter is sleeping in as he is deaf and blind. I have since adjusted where I tie him and make sure that he is in the room with her before I leave. There has been no further damage. Also, I have the option of asking gentleman whose name they left me as a first call for house issues. TRYING TO PRIME OLD INTERIOR WOOD DOORS BUT THEY KEEP GETTING HAIR LINE CRACKS? HELP!?
Recently I decided to paint the old wainscoting and doors in my old house. After reading up on how I should go about doing this I decided to use a Alkyd primer of course I washed the wood first. The primer on the wainscoting looks great The next day I woke up the wood doors had hair line cracks all over them. I decided to retry priming the doors and once again everything looked great until I woke up the next day and hair line cracks resurfaced all over the doors. Is there something I can do to prevent this? I did not sand the doors, just confused because I do not want to waste anymore primer if I do not need to Any help would be much appreciated
Will a wood door hold up to the elements?
I'm looking at replacing my entry door, and I'm trying to decide what route to go, real wood or fiberglass. I'd like it to look like real wood, and a quick search on " wood look" fiberglass doors with 2 sidelights has the price at $2000 . I can find prefinished mahogany doors for less than that. My concern is the door would be exposed to the elements. It faces west but doesn't get a lot of sun due to trees. It does get wet with rain and snow, though. I was reading one door manufacturer faq's and it was saying you had to have a substantial overhang for wood doors. I've got no overhang at all. Is it foolish to put a wood door in this environment? This isn't my dream house, but I'd like it to look nice. In other words, I'll probably not be living here in 10 years, so a door that lasts forever doesn't make much of a difference to me. At the same time, it's a nice house and I'd like a good quality attractive door. Still, price is a big factor.I guess I should say there IS a 1.5 2ft roof overhang. Wow, " Doing the Math" , why so critical? It's actually a very nice house, thanks. To Anna or anyone else who has had a mahogany door, what was the finish used and what kind of weather was it exposed to?
Color varnish on painted wood door?
hi.i have a wood doors at home,they r in original condition,no paint.i tried 1 door to paint white color DELUXE gloss but after 2 coat still original wood shows under it,looks really ugly.i now thinking about color varnish for all door same color as doors can i do it on painted door as well i do paint half door
