I want to make my laminate counters looks glossy, but is a polyurethane, or varnish safe to use around food?

Help with painting laminate counters!?
I bought into the idea that the Rustoleum Counter paint will properly paint laminate counters and it doesn't. I took extra measures that the can didn't say to do I know to do this because of the line of work I'm in. I sanded the counters, painted, then put a clear epoxy coat on top. My counters are chipping everywhere not matter how careful I am. I wrote a complaint to Rustoleum and got most of my money back, but my counters are still a wreck. I cannot replace them because I am in an apartment and the cabinets are backless and nailed to the drywall they will just crumble. I need some ideas of a strong paint that will adhere and not chip. I know in commercial applications the concrete is painted and things like that...so there has to be something out there to paint my counters with that will not chip I'm at my wit's end. Help
Has anyone ever installed laminate counters?
I'm considering installing new laminate sheeting on my kitchen and bathroom counters. The have dusty rose laminate on them and I want to just put a new sheet on top of the existing sheet. There is no curved edge so it doesn't seem too tricky. And we have enough money to pay someone to fix it in case I screw it up royally, lol. I was just wondering if anyone has ever tried it before and or has any advice.Yes they are in good shape. I was planning to either rent or buy a laminate router. I haven't looked to see where i can rent one or how much it will be, but you can buy one for $80. Do you know how much she paid to have them recovered? And that's a good idea buying them directly from the companies.
Why are my new laminate counters already fading?
Two months ago, I bought a newly renovated house with beautiful Wilsonart laminate cabinets. I noticed the other day that near the stove but not on the same side as the stove the edges of the counters are already fading where the top of the counter meets the side. It was just a couple of spots at first, but now it is going down the entire edge. What could be causing this? I have not used any abrasive cleaners or anything with bleach. The only thing I have used is Lysol disinfectant wipes or a sponge. One thing my husband does when he is cooking with any kind of lid, he will take a folded dishcloth, and set the hot lid on the counter when he is stirring the food. Is it possible that the heat and moisture is causing this fading along the edges? We thought the dishcloth would be enough protection, but we may be wrong. Is there any way to restore my counters to their original color?
